Series seven of the adventures of the nation’s grumpiest doctor and his patients in the Cornish village of Portwenn continues with episode five, Control-Alt-Delete. Fed up with Buddy following him around, Martin (Martin Clunes) decides to find a vet and have him put down. Both Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) and Louisa (Caroline Catz) manage to persuade him that it is not that simple as no vet will put down a healthy dog on Martin’s say so, and a new home is found for Buddy with Angela Sim (Caroline Quentin), a local vet - although Martin will have to take him there himself. The Doc is unimpressed by Angela’s alternative approaches to medicine – even if it is only veterinary medicine – but at least he has managed to offload Buddy. Ruth (Eileen Atkins) finds out what Bert (Ian McNeice) has been trying to make his own whisky, but he eventually gets her to keep his secret. Clive (Malcolm Storry) is suspicious of Mrs Tishell (Selina Cadell) and whom she is cooking for, but decides to give her the benefit of the doubt and give their marriage another go. PC Penhale (John Marquez) wants to ask Janice (Robyn Addison) out, but only succeeds in inviting her to a group BBQ at his place. Then he has to persuade Al (Joe Absolom) and Morwenna to come to make up the numbers. Louisa and Martin’s therapy homework results in a picnic – much to Martin’s dismay – but even this does not go to plan. They are interrupted by Angela and Buddy on the beach, where Angela appears to be hallucinating, and Martin has to get Penhale to help calm her down.

I've enjoyed every episode of Doc Martin up until Control-Alt-Delete. I always felt that there lay inside Martin Ellingham a tender soul with insufficiently developed tools for expressing that side of himself.
ReplyDeleteThis episode's portrayal of his willingness, yea, his well-nigh *eagerness* to euthanize a perfectly healthy creature simply because it posed an INCONVENIENCE to him has soured me for good on the series. Mayhap the version of the Hippocratic Oath favored these days has fallen far indeed from the "Nor shall any man's entreaty prevail upon me to administer poison to anyone; neither will I counsel any man to do so." of the past.
Good riddance to bad rubbish, Martin; it seems that all along, beneath the boorish heel of your exterior lie only more boorish heel. Good DAY to you.

I will never feel the same way about him again, cannot believe children watched this episode, and feel disappointed and outraged. I thought Martin was secretly a good guy. He cannot be forgiven for this.
ReplyDeleteI was appalled at the near euthanasia of the dog in the Control-Alt-Delete episode. Bad Taste doesn't begin describe it. A rude curmudgeon is one thing, killing a dog out of annoyance is simply deranged. This episode was written, produced and acted in by people who do not understand comedy.
ReplyDeleteI agree I shall never watch this show again,what a boring doc,I thought he was suppose to be a nice guy underneath that attitude but to kill a helpless dog is not funny.Who allowed that scene in the show?Fire that writer and think before you put cruelty into the show
