Falmouth vet nurse's pet pooches appear in ITV's Doc Martin

Three dogs owned by a veterinary nurse in Falmouth appeared on screen in ITV's Doc Martin this week, although one was singled out for a special part.

Ruth Collett, a nurse at Rosemullion, watched with pride on Monday as her dog Lulu played the part of recently rehomed rescue dog. Her two other dogs could be seen alongside ten other dogs from the Falmouth and Truro area who portrayed stray and unwanted dogs in kennels.

"The most difficult part for Lulu was to ignore Doc Martin as he stomps past her muttering angrily with another dog walking past," said Ruth.

Eleven-year-old Lulu, however, has always been a real start at Rosemullion. She was abandoned at the at vets when she was quite young and was adopted by Ruth. However, she is a regular visitor the vets' practice where she is a regular blood donor for very poorly dogs who are being treated at the veterinary hospital.

"She also helps out at puppy classes where she helps shy and timid puppies to socialise with adult dogs," said Ruth. "Lulu was chosen (for her role in Doc Martin) as she is very calm, well socialised and used to a veterinary environment.

"Lulu had a very long day filming but she had lots of treats, cuddles and kisses from both Martin Clunes and Caroline Quentin, who plays a vet in the show."

Doc Martin Series 7 Episode 6 Trailer

Patience is a virtue...

It looks like we might have to wait a little longer for Episode 6, with ITV listing its transmission date as Monday 19th October.

TV round-up: Doc Martin....

THE irascible, hilarious GP of fictional Portwenn has commanded his surgery for many years, but this current series is the funniest yet.

Doc Martin (ITV, Monday) is, yes, a drama, but Martin Clunes’ brilliantly crafted comic performance as Doctor Ellingham is surely worthy of a BAFTA. The show also needs some recognition from the British Medical Association for services to obscure diseases.

In last week’s episode the range of ailments/conditions was both baffling and incredible. Top of the list was Kawasaki Disease, which apparently is not what happens to someone who rides on the back of a motorbike for the first time. As we now know, it strikes Cornish children who can collapse without warning as they are taking in a wonderful sea view while trying to learn how far Saturn is from the Sun.

If Kawasaki didn’t do it for you, with Doc Martin shouting “Get out of my way!” as he knocked the poor child on to his back and made a mad dash to the hospital with his estranged, we also had the more mundane but no less entertaining asthma combined with double leg failure, varicose veins, an unsightly ganglion and a profusely bleeding man with his child’s fishing hook skewered through his thumb.

All of the above was watched over by an attentive work experience teenager who was a splendid mini-me Doc Martin, and appeared to know just as much as our favourite medic acquired by reading weighty drug manuals and wrongly treating his mother with pocketfuls of Beta blockers. Welcome to the NHS of the future!

Doc Martin - Series 7 Episode 5 Trailer - Control-Alt-Delete

Episode 5 - Control-Alt-Delete

Series seven of the adventures of the nation’s grumpiest doctor and his patients in the Cornish village of Portwenn continues with episode five, Control-Alt-Delete. Fed up with Buddy following him around, Martin (Martin Clunes) decides to find a vet and have him put down. Both Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) and Louisa (Caroline Catz) manage to persuade him that it is not that simple as no vet will put down a healthy dog on Martin’s say so, and a new home is found for Buddy with Angela Sim (Caroline Quentin), a local vet -  although Martin will have to take him there himself. The Doc is unimpressed by Angela’s alternative approaches to medicine – even if it is only veterinary medicine – but at least he has managed to offload Buddy. Ruth (Eileen Atkins) finds out what Bert (Ian McNeice) has been trying to make his own whisky, but he eventually gets her to keep his secret. Clive (Malcolm Storry) is suspicious of Mrs Tishell (Selina Cadell) and whom she is cooking for, but decides to give her the benefit of the doubt and give their marriage another go. PC Penhale (John Marquez) wants to ask Janice (Robyn Addison) out, but only succeeds in inviting her to a group BBQ at his place. Then he has to persuade Al (Joe Absolom) and Morwenna to come to make up the numbers. Louisa and Martin’s therapy homework results in a picnic – much to Martin’s dismay – but even this does not go to plan. They are interrupted by Angela and Buddy on the beach, where Angela appears to be hallucinating, and Martin has to get Penhale to help calm her down.

Series 7 - 5. Control-Alt-Delete

This is the episode that Men Behaving Badly fans have been eagerly awaiting: the reunion of Martin Clunes and Caroline Quentin. She plays slightly batty animal-sanctuary owner Angela who takes in Buddy, the scruffy stray dog that’s been hounding (sorry) Martin. According to her, Buddy said he’s keeping the doc company because he knows he’s lonely.

“She’s completely deranged, but she should be back to her normal self in the morning – slightly deranged,” is Martin’s diagnosis. The role certainly gives Quentin the chance to go crazy. Meanwhile, Joe is making puppy dog eyes at Janice – actually he looks at her in much the same way Buddy looks at Martin.

5/8. After reaching breaking point with being followed around by Buddy, Martin resolves to find a vet to have it put down, while Ruth finds out that Bert has been trying to make his own whisky. Clive is suspicious of Mrs Tishell and who she might be cooking meals for, Penhale makes a hash of asking Janice out, and Louisa and Martin's therapy homework results in a picnic on the beach, where they are interrupted by local vet Angela Sim - who appears to be hallucinating. Comedy drama, guest starring Caroline Quentin.

Doc Martin stars reveal the name game that keeps them in titters on set (VIDEO)

Next time you're watching Doc Martin, pay close attention to the patients' names because the cast have created a punning name game that keeps them amused on set.

Jessica Ransom told What's on TV: "We always put in funny patient names, we've had a lot of good fun putting a few of those in. We had a nice old lady the other day who was Alice Cooper... Oh, Germain Mann that was a good one!"

"I've got a list, last series I made a list which was in my reception book on the desk and it mysteriously disappeared between the last series and this series, so I've had to start my list again."
Robyn Addison (Janice) added: "We had a whole conversation at dinner during filming..."

Jessica said: "Once you start playing the game of Funny Patient Names nobody really speaks... So I've got a new book, so I might have to take it with me so it doesn't get stolen because we've still got to get in Paul Mycock and Theresa Green for example. There's plenty more up my sleeves."

Doc Martin star Dame Eileen Atkins: ‘We have to stop thinking it’s all over at 80!’ (VIDEO)

At 81 Dame Eileen Atkins could be forgiven for turning down scripts and putting up her feet but the renowned star of stage and screen says that just like her Doc Martin alter ego Dr Ruth Ellingham, she has no plans to retire.

Talking to What’s on TV on the set of Doc Martin, Dame Eileen said: "I’m obviously not looking so hot because they’ve given [Ruth] an illness, and they’re trying to make me retire. Which is really good, because it is a difficult thing for most people. I don’t know how people enjoy their retirement so much – I’m glad that some people can, but it would be a dread thing for me to retire and it’s a dread thing for Ruth, too.”

While filming the current series of Doc Martin, Dame Eileen celebrated her 81st birthday.
She said: “It’s rather a relief being 81, you stop being ‘the milestone’… One has to stop thinking it’s all over at 80!”

She added: “I enjoy work. People say to me ‘why don’t you just go out and have a good time?’ And I say ‘the good time is working!’ That’s how I feel about it."

Eileen also sang the praises of Martin Clunes and the Doc Martin cast: “It’s always wonderful here. I love working with Martin. I love all the cast. Martin has surrounded himself with first-rate actors. So that makes it much more fun to play. You’re not working with a dodo ever... Somebody who just can’t do it. Which sometimes does happen!

Dog lover Martin Clunes has to act his socks off tonight, as the doc gets exasperated with Buddy, an adorable Jack Russell who waits outside the surgery every day with a wagging tail. After threatening to put the dog down, the doc palms him off on local holistic vet Angie (played hilariously by Clunes' old friend Caroline Quentin). Unsurprisingly the pair don't see eye to eye… Meanwhile, Louisa realises she may be to blame for some of the problems in her marriage.

'It was like no time has passed' Martin Clunes and Caroline Quentin reunite on Doc Martin

The stars are best known for playing warring couple Gary and Dorothy in the sitcom which ran for seven seasons between 1992 to 1999.

It may be a whole new millennium since they last graced our screens together, but Martin and Caroline confirmed all their chemistry was still there when they got back together to film Doc Martin recently.

In next week's episode, Caroline stars as Angela, a holistic vet, who the grumpy GP employs to put his dog down.

Speaking of their reunion on This Morning today, Caroline said: "I think Martin and Phillipa – Martin's wife who produces Doc Martin – suddenly thought let's get Quenty down here and have a bit of fun."

On the set of ‘Doc Martin 7’, pt 2

When we last left Eric and David’s Excellent Adventure, our public television colleagues had arrived in Port Isaac and begun filming on the forthcoming behind-the-scenes documentary, Doc Martin – Seven Grumpy Seasons, which is set to premiere on public television stations in America this December. If you missed part 1 yesterday, you can catch up here. 

Another Doc Martin Adventure, part 2

As the remainder of the week unfolded we observed filming of a scene outside Doc’s iconic stone house overlooking the harbor (up the hill from the Large restaurant). The shot presented a number of different crowd control and filming issues, especially because it involved the Doc’s car driving up the very, very narrow street. Coordinating the flow of tourists/pedestrians, local trade people, groups of fans who want to watch, and the deployment of an entire film crew on steep, narrow Roscarrock Road is amazing to see. A Doc Martin shooting day can last 12 hours, sometimes more.

Suffice it to say that over the week, the actors and crew worked incredibly hard – and we were with them just about every step of the way. We got to witness a scene being shot about 30 minutes from Port Isaac in a wooded valley with a small stream. All the camera gear, along with fog machines and other support equipment, had to be hand carried down a narrow, slippery, windy, muddy path. Dennis, Pete and Will were representing Team America – there was literally no room for anyone else to be standing around. Wait until you see the footage. It’s awesome.

Dateline: Port Isaac – On the set of ‘Doc Martin 7’, pt 1

As I mentioned earlier this week, for those ‘Clunatics’ in the States who have been waiting (im)patiently for the return of Doc Martin, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Not only is the light shining brightly with series 7 set to air on public television stations beginning in January 2016, there is a brand new behind-the-scenes special, Doc Martin – Seven Grumpy Seasons, headed our way in December to wet our collective appetites, courtesy of our colleagues at American Public Television.  

Working extremely hard on your behalf, Eric Luskin and David Rubinsohn traveled to Port Isaac this past Summer to spend time on the set of Doc Martin during the filming of series 7 to produce the upcoming Doc Martin – Seven Grumpy Seasons special. Having had the opportunity to do the same the year before on the set of Father Brown producing a ‘making-of’ special, Father Brown: Saving Souls, Solving Crimes, I can attest to the fact that while the work was hard and the hours were long, I’ll bet both Eric and David had more fun than the law allows also.

To give Tellyspotting readers a bit of insight into his trip to “Portwenn”, APT’s Eric Luskin found time between the long days of filming and the even longer nights in the pub to file this report from the picturesque seaside village of Port Isaac.

Martin Clunes reveals his hysterical reunion with Caroline Quentin on Doc Martin

As lovers Gary and Dorothy in Men Behaving Badly, Martin Clunes and Caroline Quentin tickled the nation. Now they’re set for their first on-screen reunion since BBC’s Men Behaving Badly (1992–1999) ended almost 17 years ago!

Speaking about Caroline’s guest role in Doc Martin, Martin Clunes revealed there’s a simple explanation why they haven’t worked together again until now: “Nobody has asked us to! So we’ve written the part of holistic vet Angela Sim especially for Caroline. There was nobody else.”
During Caroline’s guest outing fans of Doc Martin will see her appear as alternative vet, Angela Sim. What’s on TV can reveal during the fifth episode the Doc loses the rag because he’s being followed incessantly by stray dog Buddy and resolves to get him put down. Fortunately, the grumpy medic fails in his attempts to have Buddy annihilated so, rest assured, no dogs were harmed in the making of this episode!

Instead, the Doc turns to holistic vet Angela Sim who offers to take Buddy in – for a fee of £94! But it’s not the last the Doc sees of Buddy or Angela. The stray keeps returning and later, while on a picnic with Louisa, hippy vet Angela appears to be hallucinating and in danger…
Martin said: “Caroline is so brilliant. It was very funny to see the reaction after Angela had self-medicated with animal medicine when we did a scene on the beach. Caroline played her role perfectly, is terribly funny, and completely plausible.

What's Worth Watching: Doc Martin on Acorn TV for Monday, October 5

Doc Martin, "Rescue Me" and "The Shock of the New" (available Monday, Oct. 5, on Acorn TV)

Stuck in Portwenn, the quaint seaside town he considers "the village of the idiots," with his wife off in Spain (with baby son) to get some distance to sort out their relationship, is it any wonder that Doc Martin's (Martin Clunes) bedside manner is particularly gruff? His bark has more bite than usual as Season 7 of the gently comedic drama gets underway. (The first two episodes of the popular British import are available Monday exclusively on the Acorn streaming service, with the remaining six episodes rolled out on successive Mondays. In January, American Public Television will distribute the episodes to local PBS stations.)

With the doc's strained love life the #1 topic for local gossip, Martin decides to take the plunge and see a therapist, a task from which his equally prickly Aunt Ruth (the wonderful Eileen Atkins) wisely recuses herself. She's a silent partner (but "not dumb," she snaps) in the B&B that bumbling Al Large (Joe Absolom) is frantically trying to get ready for customers. As luck would have it, two of Al's workers become patients of Doc Martin, who's distracted by being unable to reach the absent Louisa (Caroline Catz) on her retreat.

‘Doc Martin – Seven Grumpy Seasons’ headed to public television

In just a few short months, January 2016 to be exact, the long-awaited return of one of your favorite British bits of telly will be headed stateside. No, not Downton Abbey. Well, actually, that is headed our way in January but we’re talking about the return of everyone’s favorite British GP with a dismal bedside manner, Dr. Martin Ellingham. Currently airing in the UK, the new series of Doc Martin is headed to public television stations via American Public Television and Acorn Media beginning in January 2016.

Ahead of the new series of eight episodes will be a very special one-off, behind-the-scenes look at the making of Doc Martin 7 which will be airing on a number of public television stations in December. Working very hard on your behalf, two colleagues from American Public Television, Eric Luskin and David Rubinsohn, toughed it out and travelled to Port Isaac earlier this summer to be on set during the filming of series 7. In the next several weeks, Tellyspotting will have a first-person account from both David and Eric from the Doc Martin set to give you a glimpse as to why you will most definitely want to be setting your DVR for Doc Martin: Seven Grumpy Seasons in December.
