Doc Martin - Series 7 Episode 5 Trailer - Control-Alt-Delete

Doc Martin stars reveal the name game that keeps them in titters on set (VIDEO)

Next time you're watching Doc Martin, pay close attention to the patients' names because the cast have created a punning name game that keeps them amused on set.

Jessica Ransom told What's on TV: "We always put in funny patient names, we've had a lot of good fun putting a few of those in. We had a nice old lady the other day who was Alice Cooper... Oh, Germain Mann that was a good one!"

"I've got a list, last series I made a list which was in my reception book on the desk and it mysteriously disappeared between the last series and this series, so I've had to start my list again."
Robyn Addison (Janice) added: "We had a whole conversation at dinner during filming..."

Jessica said: "Once you start playing the game of Funny Patient Names nobody really speaks... So I've got a new book, so I might have to take it with me so it doesn't get stolen because we've still got to get in Paul Mycock and Theresa Green for example. There's plenty more up my sleeves."

Doc Martin star Dame Eileen Atkins: ‘We have to stop thinking it’s all over at 80!’ (VIDEO)

At 81 Dame Eileen Atkins could be forgiven for turning down scripts and putting up her feet but the renowned star of stage and screen says that just like her Doc Martin alter ego Dr Ruth Ellingham, she has no plans to retire.

Talking to What’s on TV on the set of Doc Martin, Dame Eileen said: "I’m obviously not looking so hot because they’ve given [Ruth] an illness, and they’re trying to make me retire. Which is really good, because it is a difficult thing for most people. I don’t know how people enjoy their retirement so much – I’m glad that some people can, but it would be a dread thing for me to retire and it’s a dread thing for Ruth, too.”

While filming the current series of Doc Martin, Dame Eileen celebrated her 81st birthday.
She said: “It’s rather a relief being 81, you stop being ‘the milestone’… One has to stop thinking it’s all over at 80!”

She added: “I enjoy work. People say to me ‘why don’t you just go out and have a good time?’ And I say ‘the good time is working!’ That’s how I feel about it."

Eileen also sang the praises of Martin Clunes and the Doc Martin cast: “It’s always wonderful here. I love working with Martin. I love all the cast. Martin has surrounded himself with first-rate actors. So that makes it much more fun to play. You’re not working with a dodo ever... Somebody who just can’t do it. Which sometimes does happen!

John Marquez: 'Penhale decides it's time to take a wife in Doc Martin!' (VIDEO)

Doc Martin star John Marquez says his character Pc Penhale has decided it's time to take a wife and new Portwenn resident Janice is the woman for him.

John told What's on TV that he's become infatuated with Janice (Robyn Addison), who is about becomes the nanny to Doc Martin and Louisa's baby James Henry, so he tries to make himself known to her - with predictably amusing consequences.

What's on TV asked John if he's happy to see Penhale in love. "That’s a funny question, isn’t it, because as an actor I don’t mind, whatever keeps it funny and going well. I mean it would be kind of strange for Penhale to have some sort of success because he usually runs on being unsuccessful. At the same time it’s sort of opened up a nice opportunity to play a nicer, sweeter side to him and also, as well, just because you’ve met someone it doesn’t mean it’s going to go smoothly!"

John said he had no hesitation in returning to Doc Martin for series seven.

"It’s very well written for me. I immediately, as soon as I read it, I can visualise what I can do," he said. "Also it taps into my creative thing. Sometimes I go, 'If I say this or do that it will be even better', and [the producers] will always be really, really open because they know I know the character so well…

"It’s still creative for me, I guess that’s the answer, that’s why it’s easy for me to come back."

Martin Clunes on Loose Woment

Love is in the Portwenn air in the new series of Doc Martin

The Doc’s marriage to Louisa may be on the rocks when we return to the fictional Cornish village of Portwenn this year. However, love is in the air for favourites Al Large and Morwenna Newcross.
PC Joe Penhale, meanwhile, has his head turned by newcomer, Janice.

Best pals on and off screen, Robyn Addison (Janice) and Jessica Ransom (Morwenna), explained more when we caught with them on the Doc Martin set earlier this year.

Jessica Ransom, who plays the doctor’s receptionist, reveals: “Morwenna is now living with Janice, as opposed to Al (Joe Absolom), which was a disaster in the last series. But there’s still a little spark between them!”

She adds: “Morwenna hasn’t yet been fired for surliness in relation to the Doc’s grumpiness!
“Morwenna starts to do some operations, which is quite exciting! She manages to save someone’s life on a lifeboat in the first episode – with her friend Janice, who isn’t as medically astute!

“Later in the series Morwenna reads a book about assertiveness. She feels she needs to have a pay rise because she’s doing all these operations, running the show, and stopping the patients from complaining to the NHS about Martin’s excessive grumpiness!”

New addition, Robyn, explained how her character, Janice, comes to be involved in village life in the seventh series: “Janice doesn’t have a job so Morwenna sets her up to be the Ellingham’s new nanny. They didn’t have much choice - it was Janice or no one!”

Adding: “Janice is a very vain individual and that vanity can lead to some disastrous childcare!”
Despite Janice’s cavalier attitude to babysitting, she impresses local Pc Penhale. Robyn reveals: “Janice knows from day one Penhale’s interested in her. He follows her around like a puppy dog… to begin with she just likes having someone like her. But the thought of him maybe leaving (SPOILER ALERT!) causes her to reassess…”

Love also blossoms for slow-burners Al and Morwenna, explains Jessica: “All the way through there’s lots of really nice stuff with Joe and Morwenna being kind to each other and having lots of nice smiles across the room. By the end we’re left feeling like they could be more than just friends. They’ve got over the embarrassing, awkward, almost-date they had at the end of the last series.”

Doc Martin returns to ITV on Monday, September 7.

Doc Martin Series 7 Video Podcast #3 #4 #5

Martin Clunes on Doc Martin: 'I love trying to punish this awful man!' (VIDEO)

Martin Clunes has revealed what keeps bringing him back to his most famous role, as the grumpy, blood-phobic GP star of ITV's Doc Martin: “I love trying to punish this awful man in various ways!"

Martin told What's on TV exclusively on set in Cornwall: “I love and I hate him. I slightly envy his liberty sometimes. He’s a fun space to inhabit... If this was the only thing I did for the rest of my life I’d be really happy!”

Martin also revealed he'll be joining forces on the new series with his Men Behaving Badly co-star Caroline Quentin.

He said: “It was just heaven. She’s my best friend. We had so much fun all those years ago. We’ve always been close… Caroline only lives an hour from us in Devon.”

Martin added his other Men Behaving Badly co-star, Neil Morrissey, had a few things to say about Caroline and Martin’s on-screen reunion: “Neil wanted to know where his part was!”

He revealed there’s trouble in store for Doc Martin and his wife, Louisa, when the new series gets under way: “Their relationship was really grim when we last saw them. There is a conscious effort, initialised by the doctor, to fix things and resolve their relationship that involves a little therapy…

Throughout the series they’re both in and out of therapy to see whether or not there’s a future in their relationship.”

Martin also hinted at the other character’s storylines: “There’s a really good operation on Dame Eileen Atkins head!”

He added: “The scripts this year are rock solid. I think the best we’ve ever had. There’s loads for everyone to do – Bert’s bankruptcy, Al’s new business, Ruth’s illness, and romances here and there. They all punch their own weight.”

The new series of Doc Martin begins on ITV on Monday, September 7 at 9pm.

Martin Clunes returns as Britain’s favourite grumpy medic in a new series of Doc Martin for ITV (SPOILERS)

Martin Clunes reprises his role as Dr. Martin Ellingham, the GP with a brusque bedside manner and a phobia of blood, in eight new episodes of the ratings winning drama produced by Buffalo Pictures, and set in the idyllic, sleepy hamlet of Portwenn in Cornwall.

Picturesque Port Isaac on the North Cornwall coast is the setting for this popular series. Caroline Catz plays Doc Martin’s wife Louisa. The couple married in the last series, but their marital harmony was short lived. After a life-threatening incident, Louisa decided to take their son James Henry to stay with her mother in Spain while they try to work out their problems.

The Doc is heartbroken by their departure, and realises he has got to make changes if he wants to win them back, and be a family again.

Martin Clunes says: “It was great to be back on the beautiful North Cornish coast to shoot series seven of Doc Martin. The Doc has some serious work to do if he is going to persuade Louisa to come back.”

Audience figures since the series was introduced in 2004 have averaged in excess of 9 million viewers.

Returning to the series, Dame Eileen Atkins plays Doc Martin’s formidable Aunt Ruth. She doesn’t suffer fools, just like her nephew. In the new series Aunt Ruth faces a medical emergency, which she tries to ignore, but the Doc won’t let her.

Ian McNeice returns as local restaurateur Bert Large, with Joe Absolom as his tolerant son Al. With the restaurant struggling to stay afloat Bert dreams up another moneymaking scheme.

Meanwhile Al is setting up in business with Ruth. He’s renovated her farmhouse, and is opening a bed and breakfast to attract tourists for fishing holidays. The first guests are, however, far from impressed.

John Marquez will also reprise his role as eccentric local police officer PC Joe Penhale, who often creates more problems than he solves as he attempts to instill law and order into the community. In the new series he is getting to grips with a newly issued Taser gun, with disastrous consequences.

Jessica Ransom is back as receptionist, Morwenna Newcross, who is looking for a pay rise for trying to keep the doctor in line. Selina Cadell returns as Mrs Tishell, the pharmacist.

Joining the series is Robyn Addison, who plays Janice the new nanny employed to look after James Henry, and Emily Bevan, as Dr Rachel Timoney, the psychotherapist who tries to help the Doc to save his marriage.

The series has a host of guest stars including Caroline Quentin, Gemma Jones, Finty Williams, Daniel Ryan, and Rosie Cavaliero. Sigourney Weaver has a cameo role in one episode.

More than 800 local people turned up for auditions in Port Isaac for extras roles in the new series. As the doors of the church hall opened for the auditions there was a queue of 150 babies in prams and pushchairs hoping to be selected for the role of 11-month-old James Henry. Archer Langridge, Harry Rossi Collins, Maverick Bentley and Olly Gard took turns to toddle into the role.

Following its launch in 2004 Doc Martin was an instant success, winning a place in the hearts of the audience despite the Doc’s lack of social skills.

Philippa Braithwaite produced the series, Mark Crowdy is executive producer and the directors are Nigel Cole, Charles Palmer and Ben Gregor. The writers are Jack Lothian, Richard Stoneman and Julian Unthank.

Doc Martin was recommissioned for ITV by Steve November and Victoria Fea. Steve says: “We are delighted Doc Martin is back on ITV. Martin has created a unique and very watchable character who for all his faults is hugely appreciated by the audience.” Doc Martin is screened worldwide including in America, Africa, Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Italy, Russia, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, Sweden, Uruguay and Venezuela.
